Kaiyang county is advancing the Rural Standard Place Name Initiative, and the practice in Longguang village serves as a case study of how this initiative can empower rural vitalization.
Place names in villages often reflect local natural landscapes and historical culture, recording history and carrying on cultural heritage. Longguang village, with its Nanjiang Grand Canyon and stunning scenery, capitalizes on its natural landscapes – tea gardens at the top of the mountain, orchards in the mountains, and vegetable gardens at the bottom of the mountains – and its rich ethnic culture, making it a nationally recognized key village for rural tourism.
Longguang village has integrated the Rural Standard Place Name Initiative with the development of the rural tourism industry, focusing on the deep integration of agriculture, culture, and tourism. The village has explored its historical and cultural characteristics and geographical features, standardized the setting of place name signs, and increased the promotion of local and ethnic culture.
In 2024, Kaiyang launched the Rural Standard Place Name Initiative, promoting the installation of signs and carrying out the comprehensive collection, dynamic updating, and standardized mapping of toponym information.
Kaiyang has completed the naming of six roads, set up and maintained 31 village name signs, collected and entered 788 village names into the national toponym information database, and conducted three village name culture promotion activities, with a total investment of over 200,000 yuan ($28,500).
