Kaiyang county in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, is transforming its lush landscapes into engines of prosperity through eco-tourism and sustainable forestry.
With a 57.25 percent forest coverage rate, the county has established 8,000 mu (533.33 hectares) of demonstration bases for the non-timber forest-based economy, cultivating medicinal herbs such as coptis. It has developed a comprehensive modern tourism industry combining forest tourism, therapy, agricultural experiences, vacationing, and cultural immersion.

Local farmer Chi Zhihua typifies the change: "Now I earn 100 yuan ($13.9) every day by growing herbs near home – much better than city jobs."
In addition, the county's "sports + tourism" model, featuring canyon climbing and rafting, is attracting a growing number of visitors.
At the 2025 summer retreat festival, Kaiyang unveiled its "selenium-rich lifestyle" program, integrating health tourism with local agriculture. By linking ecological environment to industry, the county demonstrates that green development can create excellent opportunities.
