Kaiyang county in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has been working to develop high-standard farmland.
High-standard farmland has the following four features: concentrated and contiguous farmland with strong infrastructure, such as waterways and electricity, that is conducive to large-scale operations, mechanized production and standardized production; increasing production capacity by 10 to 20 percent upon completion; strong disaster resistance; and high resource utilization.
The county's high-standard farmland project, carried out by Guiyang Industrial Control Land Reclamation Co, involves a total investment of 322 million yuan ($44.79 million). The company is responsible for the construction of 30,000 mu (2,000 hectares) of high-standard farmland and the reconstruction of 8,000 mu of farmland.
The project started in October 2022 and is now 80 percent complete, with 162.58 kilometers of road and 64.84 kilometers of channels for irrigation and drainage having been built.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of July 20, and the company will ensure the new paddy fields can be used to grow aquatic crops.
The high-standard farmland has not only increased the crop yield, but also benefited local farmers by offering them jobs and increasing their incomes.
