In recent years, Kaiyang county in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has renovated idle courtyards to develop its rural economy.

Shi Yunbo, a resident of Wenquan village in Kaiyang, renovated his idle house into a tidy and beautiful homestay with fruit trees in the courtyard, which he has been able to monetize.

The courtyard has not only improved his residential environment, but also provided tourists a better place to relax and have meals, presenting a business opportunity for locals. Five other villagers are currently renovating their houses to start their own rural tourism businesses.

In addition to homestays, villagers have made full use of idle land around their homes to grow vegetables and fruits.

Next, Kaiyang strives to develop its small-scale courtyard economy into a large industry.
