The Kaiyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine successfully implemented the new technology of autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy on May 9, which was applied to the treatment of knee osteoarthritis, achieving satisfactory clinical results.

A 63-year-old called Chen was a beneficiary of the therapy.

Chen had suffered from joint pain for many years. However, continuous conservative treatment methods showed poor results. The symptoms of pain recurred and gradually worsened.

She was recently suggested to undergo PRP therapy. As a result, her knee joint pain improved significantly, to the point where she can stand up and walk normally.

PRP refers to a plasma product containing high concentrations of platelets, obtained by extracting fresh whole blood from the patient.

The platelet concentration in PRP is usually three to five times higher than that in normal whole blood. The main components include platelets, plasma, fibrinogen, white blood cells, and other components. PRP can also be prepared into a gel to repair wounds.

According to insiders from the hospital, platelets in PRP are rich in growth factors and play an important role in hemostasis, wound healing, inflammatory responses, thrombosis, and the repair of damaged blood vessels or cells.

Moving forward, Kaiyang hospital will explore the promotion and application of PRP technology in clinical departments such as chronic disease, orthopedics, acupuncture and physiotherapy, gastroenterology, gynecology and obstetrics, stomatology, and dermatology, bringing new hope for the treatment of intractable wounds.
