Guiyang opens north transportation route to Yangtze River

Fourteen 500-metric-ton cargo ships carrying 6,800 tons of phosphate ore departed from Guiyang's Kaiyang Port on Nov 16 and headed for Chongqing, marking the opening of Guiyang's north water transportation route to the Yangtze River.

The cargo ships are expected to arrive in Chongqing's Fuling district on the night of Nov 18. Water transportation can reduce transportation costs by more than half and is more environmentally-friendly than road transportation.

Kaiyang Port is Guizhou's largest port along Wujiang River, and central Guizhou's only port with access to the sea. It serves 30 districts and counties in seven cities and prefectures.

Kaiyang Port, which links Guizhou to the Yangtze River, the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle, the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the Yangtze River Delta, is expected to boost regional economic growth with its new water transportation route.

Wujiang River is one of the Yangtze River's eight main tributaries, as well as Guizhou's largest river. More than 10 companies currently run transportation businesses on the river, operating 35 cargo ships.
