Kaiyang county in Guiyang held a ceremony on Sept 27 to celebrate the completion of a highway that leads to a large kiwifruit industrial base.
Located in Xinfeng village, Nanmudu town, the expressway starts at Xinfeng Primary School and is 4.7 kilometers away from the Nanmudu toll station on the Lanhai Expressway. It is 1.44 km long, 3.5 meters wide and paved with concrete.
Construction officially began on Aug 15, with an investment of about 1.06 million yuan ($155,502).
The project was led by Guiyang Transportation Investment Development Group Co Ltd to help alleviate poverty and revitalize rural development. The highway will pave the way for the agricultural facility's accelerated expansion; the base currently covers 600 mu (40 hectares).
The kiwifruit base is overseen by the Xinfeng village cooperative, which launched the project in 2014 and followed the highest standards during its development.
In 2019, Xinfeng received 1 million yuan in policy funding and adopted a management model that allows officials from the local Party branch, the cooperative and farmers to jointly operate. Farmers can get involved in the program through land transfers, buying shares to receive dividends, or offering their labor.
To date, the kiwifruit base has employed more than 300 people from Xinfeng village.
Next to the kiwifruit base is 500 mu of golden chrysanthemum, polygonum capitatum, sorghum, and various other plants, which are intended to boost the village's collective economy.
